Thinking about Miracles

When thinking about miracles that I have seen since becoming a part of Siloam Missionary Homes, my first thought focused on the Lord’s provision of a house for Betty and me. We wanted to find a house within about a five-mile radius of Siloam and Linda Hagood, our Real Estate Agent, patiently showed us quite a few! But just as the time for finding one was becoming critical, the Lord provided a house only three-tenths of a mile from Siloam’s driveway. Although we knew it would require a great amount of renovation, it was the one we had wanted from the beginning, a foreclosure, but could not get a price quote. Not only was it across the road from where we would be working, but we were able to purchase the house and three acres of land for a little more than half the amount owed the mortgage company! Amazing! God’s work!

I have seen the Lord work in many miraculous ways at Siloam, both in supplying the needs for the SMH ministry as well as for the missionary families. I saw several miracles take place in just one family who lived here for a year. I witnessed the Lord provide a van to fit their size family, a gift from someone who came forward at just the right time. Then, as the time came for them to return to their field of service, they were able to sell the van, which enabled them to purchase a car for their daughter who remained in the states to attend college. I saw the college allow her to register as an in-state student, although she had lived in the state for only 11 of the required 12 months. The Lord also graced the daughter with a wonderful Christian family to welcome her to live in their home and who treats her like a daughter. God also provided the funds for tickets for the rest of the family to return to the field, including the payment to check their bags! (In the words of the late Jerry Clower, “Ain’t God Good?!”)

These are just a “sampling” of how God is working everyday. Perhaps all of us will see more of the miraculous movement and provisions of God when we keep our physical eyes open and our spiritual eyes focused on Him every day.

Going to Liberia, Taking the Good News

Hostage…

As missionaries to the Kuna Indians in Panama, Dave and Nancy Mankins were living their dream. After seven years of learning the culture and ministering among the Kuna, they had found a home in this small village.

Then, in one terrifying moment, their dream was shattered.

On January 31, 1993, Colombian rebels burst into their home and captured Dave, along with fellow missionaries Mark Rich and Rick Tenenoff. Helplessly, their wives watched in horror as the three men were seized at gunpoint and taken into the Colombian jungles.

Join us Saturday at 3:30 on “A Place Missionaries Call Home” as Nancy tells us her story.

You can order the book “Hostage” from Nancy Mankins Hamm at NancyMankinsHamm@cfl.rr.com.

Ready to go…

We usually have a variety of ministries represented at Siloam Missionary Homes at any given time, from church planters to missionary pilots to “tent makers” (missionaries who take the gospel to a country via a “regular” job). Curt and Sally Brown who are staying with us now, have been working with Disaster Relief, most recently in Mississippi with hurricane Katrina recovery. The Lord has blessed the Browns with a number of talents and skills that they are ready and willing to use to help others for Him. Right now, Sally is using her talent to sew new flags to represent the countries where the missionaries living at SMH are serving. (I’ve seen the ones she made for Honduras and Ghana and they are beautiful!) The flags will fly at the entrance to SMH. Curt made me very thankful by giving several hours of his time and perspiration to help Betty and me with the landscaping at our house. Pray with Curt and Sally as they wait for the Lord to give them their next assignment. We love having the Browns with us, but they are ready to go where the Lord will lead.

Transitioning

These days we hear on a regular basis, “You need to be flexible. Quit stressing! Take a step back. Go with the flow.” Do any of these phrases sound familiar? Well I must say if I am totally honest, it is difficult to be flexible or to go with the flow. I was raised in a military family, as many of you know, and my dad would always plan and do things orderly. The Bible tells us to “seek ye first the kingdom of  God.” Jesus told us to “go ye into all the world and preach the gospel.” He had an urgency about His calling, to the point of being weary. But what happens when your circumstances are beyond your control?

This Saturday at 3:30 on “A Place Missionaries Call Home,”  Joyce and I will be talking with John and Carol Pierce, missionaries with New Tribes Mission from their headquarters in Sanford, Fl. Many missionaries are now transitioning to ministry state side. John and Carol will share with us how God can still use you even when your life changes because of aging parents. A program you will not want to miss. We are all transitioning in one way or another.

The time was set for May 2008,

the date that Santiago and Jackie Olortegui would return to their mission field in Australia after their year’s stay here at SMH. As May 2009 arrives, Santiago and Jackie have not returned to Australia to their ministry of assisting churches with their youth programs. Not one, but two automobile accidents (not their fault), one in January, another in March of 2008, brought injuries from which the Orlorteguis are still recovering. Both of them continue with physical therapy and after several surgeries, Santiago faces yet another. Although disappointed at times in the situation, they trust the Lord to help them through one day at a time. Please pray for their healing as well as for needed financial support, since they have lost several supporters due to being unable to return to the field. Being in the US on a religious visa does not permit them to work here.

Remember the word of the Lord to Jeremiah: “‘Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not’” (Jeremiah 33:3).
