From Vision to Valley to Victory

September 3rd, 2010

Over the past year on our radio program “A Place Missionaries Call Home” we have been following three families that felt Godhad called them to be missionaries. Monthly we would interview them on where there were and where they were going. This became know as “the Journey.”  Each family had a different occupation. Joe Readling, we called him Joe the Plumber because he used to be a plumber. He and wife, Anna, are heading to South Africa. Andy Bowersox the real estate man is watching God work to take a burden and create a ministry. He and his wife Elizabeth and children live in North Carolina. Scott Hunter, a chemist (we call him Scott the mad scientist) and his wife, Cindy and their children, are looking at calling Spain home.

Each couple has a vision, each one has had their share of valleys,  and each one has seen victories. This week join Joyce and I  on A Place Missionaries Call Home. You can listen  Saturday at 3:30 pm on WTRU am830 or  Monday 8:00 am and Thursday 8:00 pm  on WBYJ 97.9 fm Burlington, or 161 family net radio at 10:30 am Sunday.

This week we visit with these families and listen as they share their year long journey. Two of them have had  additions to their families. One was able to sell their home while another waits. This is a program you won’t want to miss. Also follow them on this website, and you can listen to the show by clicking on the segments below.

Fried Crickets or Chicken Feet??

July 28th, 2010

Remember those fried crickets and chicken feet we have been talking about on A Place Missionaries Call Home? This Saturday, you can meet Larry and Joyce, who will give you the opportunity to sample these delicacies. Missionaries to Ecuador, Lew and Jan Beeler, will be with them “live” as we discuss the fact that sometimes a missionary has to step out of their comfort zone so they don’t offend the people they are ministering to. Join us at the Through Way Shopping Center in Winston Salem in front of Foot Solutions, Saturday at 3:30 eastern.

Having An Open Door

July 6th, 2010

“For a great and effective door has been opened for me, and there are many adversaries.” I Cor. 16:9

We have heard from time to time the phrase “I am waiting on God to open or close the door.” While reading the scriptures recently in I Corinthians 16, it was encouraging to me to see that even though there was opposition (and this, by the way, came from the church), Paul did not allow it to keep him from pressing on. He had a ministry before him that he had to complete. From the day that Jesus got Paul’s attention on the road to Damascus, Paul continued to press forward, looking for opened doors of opportunity. Many times, he didn’t know what to do – the doors seemed closed. The very churches he helped plant would fight among themselves. If I were in his shoes, I might say, “What’s the use? The door is closed.” But, not Paul. He continued to move on. We know the rest of the story of his life, that even unto death, he never backed down. Even though he knew he was going to be executed for being a Christian, his main concern was God’s people and the church – to make sure their needs were being met. He was calling his fellow pastors to keep going.

Over the years of ministry here at Siloam Missionary Homes, I too, grow weary. I feel the pressures of finances and the fatigue of travel. I don’t always have the answers when a missionary comes to see me. But I know that God allows these times as doors of opportunity. God IS faithful and always shows us how to open the door. The most comforting thing is my life is my mornings alone with God. Even today, the morning is quiet and calm. His Word flows like a river through my soul. I continue to press on.

We are continuing the construction of the new Bill & Sandra Rice missionary home. The last week of June, Bible Baptist Church from New Milford, Connecticut brought a work team to put the floor trusses and floor decking on the house. You may ask, “How can you continue to build more houses with the economy the way it is?” I have asked the same question. But, like the Apostle Paul, we have a job to do. We have turned away many missionary families because we don’t have enough houses. That tells me we need to keep on keeping on. Proverbs tells us to “plan and prepare without.”

You know, friends, we don’t always have the answers and it may seem no open door, but God has a plan. It is His desire for us to reach the world. Over and over, when I think that God has closed the door, He always seems to open another one. Jesus was always looking for windows of opportunity. “Look, the fields are white unto harvest, and the laborers are few. Go ye,” He said, “and I will always be with you.”

I thank the Lord for you today – for standing in the gap for us. Almost daily I receive phone calls, e-mails or notes. Thank you for your prayers and financial support for Siloam and for the missionary families. Look for your door of opportunity. Even in these times of uncertainty, I can truly say, “If God is for us, who can be against us?”

Celebrating Pentecost

May 19th, 2010

May 19th marks the Day of Pentecost or Shavout. It is celebrated by the Jewish people around the world as the day God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses (Ex. 19:1-20,26) and is also celebrated by Christian followers of Christ as the day the Holy Spirit came in Acts 2:1-21. The message is clear. The Lord demands obedience. God works in the hearts of His children through obedience. It was a result of the act of obedience and the preparations of the heart that Moses and the people heard from God.  This same act of obedience was shown by the Holy Spirit coming to them on the day of Pentecost. By the act of obedience, the Jewish people received the law. By the same act of obedience, the followers of Christ received the Holy Spirit, and the church grew. “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized; and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.” The same day! Praise the Lord, there were added three thousand!

The Lord told his disciples to look at the fields, which are white unto  harvest. His message to them was “I will go and send you the Holy Spirit so that you can reach the world.” The message today is the same. “Go ye into all the world.”

May we renew our hearts today to reach the world through obedience to Christ. Happy Pentecost!

Even though you knew from the beginning of time…

April 23rd, 2010

that I would fail you over and over again, you, oh God, have been faithful and unwavering to me.

No unbelief or distrust made him waiver or doubtingly question concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong and was empowered by faith as he gave praise and glory to God. Fully satisfied and assured that God was able and mighty to keep His word and to do what He had promised. Romans 4:20

This passage is talking about Abraham’s promise from God and even though it took years of shaping him, God still did what He said He would do. I praise the Lord today that God loves me for who I am and knows I am human. I can look around at present day circumstances and people and know they will fail me, and they can fall apart and will let me down, but God is faithful.

“Notwithstanding, the Lord stood with me and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known and that all the Gentiles might hear; and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto His heavenly kingdom; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” II Tim. 4:17,18

Daily, I try to do it myself. I spend precious time worrying about what to do and how it will end. I have to continually go back to God’s Word and His promises. God has proven His faithfulness throughout the Bible, and I know He will be faithful to me today.

God gave me these thoughts today. Because I have struggled with something I have been praying about for a long time – I don’t see the situation getting any better and the wait is tiring and makes me discouraged and weary. Are you going through a similar situation, dear friend? Maybe today you are ready to throw in the towel and quit. You may even be to the point that you look around and wonder, “Where is God? Why do I have to go through so much heartache?” Let me encourage you – we win in the end with God on our side. He has not moved and He is faithful! Take His Word on it, not mine. Claim His promises and move forward. God tells us to enjoy today and not to worry about tomorrow.

Dear Lord, You are the God that created the heavens and the earth. It was you that loved me so much that you sent your one and only Son to take my place for sin. Even though you knew from the beginning of time that I would fail you over and over again, you are faithful and unwavering to me. Encourage my heart today, encourage my friends and my family. May my life be a reflection of you. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

Dedication & Groundbreaking

March 12th, 2010

God gave us a beautiful day as we celebrated the dedication of our new internet cafe’, God’s Rainforest. We had a good crowd of people who came out in honor of Rev. Bob Stephenson and his late wife, Joan; as well as in honor of Dallas & Gwen Davis, who recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

We also had the opportunity to break ground for the newest home, built in memory of Bill Rice and in honor of  his wife, Sandra. We are excited about this new home, and will keep you posted with progress on that. Check out more pictures on our facebook page – Siloam Missionary Homes.

“Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you and you shall glorify me.”

February 25th, 2010

I love mornings. To me the best part of the day is just before the sun comes up.  In the quietness of the day, the Lord speaks through His Word. This morning as I look out the window, the snow is falling. (more…)
