Hostage…

May 28th, 2009

As missionaries to the Kuna Indians in Panama, Dave and Nancy Mankins were living their dream. After seven years of learning the culture and ministering among the Kuna, they had found a home in this small village.

Then, in one terrifying moment, their dream was shattered.

On January 31, 1993, Colombian rebels burst into their home and captured Dave, along with fellow missionaries Mark Rich and Rick Tenenoff. Helplessly, their wives watched in horror as the three men were seized at gunpoint and taken into the Colombian jungles.

Join us Saturday at 3:30 on “A Place Missionaries Call Home” as Nancy tells us her story.

You can order the book “Hostage” from Nancy Mankins Hamm at NancyMankinsHamm@cfl.rr.com.

Ready to go…

May 26th, 2009

We usually have a variety of ministries represented at Siloam Missionary Homes at any given time, from church planters to missionary pilots to “tent makers” (missionaries who take the gospel to a country via a “regular” job). Curt and Sally Brown who are staying with us now, have been working with Disaster Relief, most recently in Mississippi with hurricane Katrina recovery. The Lord has blessed the Browns with a number of talents and skills that they are ready and willing to use to help others for Him. Right now, Sally is using her talent to sew new flags to represent the countries where the missionaries living at SMH are serving. (I’ve seen the ones she made for Honduras and Ghana and they are beautiful!) The flags will fly at the entrance to SMH. Curt made me very thankful by giving several hours of his time and perspiration to help Betty and me with the landscaping at our house. Pray with Curt and Sally as they wait for the Lord to give them their next assignment. We love having the Browns with us, but they are ready to go where the Lord will lead.

Transitioning

May 20th, 2009

These days we hear on a regular basis, “You need to be flexible. Quit stressing! Take a step back. Go with the flow.” Do any of these phrases sound familiar? Well I must say if I am totally honest, it is difficult to be flexible or to go with the flow. I was raised in a military family, as many of you know, and my dad would always plan and do things orderly. The Bible tells us to “seek ye first the kingdom of  God.” Jesus told us to “go ye into all the world and preach the gospel.” He had an urgency about His calling, to the point of being weary. But what happens when your circumstances are beyond your control?

This Saturday at 3:30 on “A Place Missionaries Call Home,”  Joyce and I will be talking with John and Carol Pierce, missionaries with New Tribes Mission from their headquarters in Sanford, Fl. Many missionaries are now transitioning to ministry state side. John and Carol will share with us how God can still use you even when your life changes because of aging parents. A program you will not want to miss. We are all transitioning in one way or another.

Larry George, President

The time was set for May 2008,

May 15th, 2009

the date that Santiago and Jackie Olortegui would return to their mission field in Australia after their year’s stay here at SMH. As May 2009 arrives, Santiago and Jackie have not returned to Australia to their ministry of assisting churches with their youth programs. Not one, but two automobile accidents (not their fault), one in January, another in March of 2008, brought injuries from which the Orlorteguis are still recovering. Both of them continue with physical therapy and after several surgeries, Santiago faces yet another. Although disappointed at times in the situation, they trust the Lord to help them through one day at a time. Please pray for their healing as well as for needed financial support, since they have lost several supporters due to being unable to return to the field. Being in the US on a religious visa does not permit them to work here.

Remember the word of the Lord to Jeremiah: “‘Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not’” (Jeremiah 33:3).

Worship Through Service

May 12th, 2009

Many times when I speak to people, I express my desire to walk as closely to the Lord as possible. I do try to apply Eph.6:18 at all times. “Praying always with all prayer and supplication.” Actually, that’s what brought me to this place in life. The Lord makes it clear in the Word that we are to worship Him. If we don’t, He’ll make the rocks cry out. But what else? Thankfully, for us as believers who have trusted in Christ as Savior, we can rest assured that we have everlasting life. So our salvation is not based on works. If you are like me, I love the Lord. He has done so much for me in all aspects. That motivates me to do as much for Him as possible. That He might use me in whatever way He can. I want to be a willing vessel. He has blessed each one of us with different gifts and talents. Would it not be wasteful and/or slothful to cast those gifts to the side with the thought of saying “I” don’t have the time, or “I” am too tired, or using some other excuse that seems to be so easy for us to find. There is so much for us to do in the service to which the Lord has called us to, “ Go ye therefore.” I had a professor who said, “Your talk talks and your walk walks, but does your talk walk?” I’d like to say, “Your service serves and your worship worships, but does your service worship?” How about let’s stop talking about going down to Siloam and helping and actually come on down! Come worship the Lord with us, using the skills and talents the Lord has given to you.

(James 1:22- “But be ye do of the word and not hearers only,”)

I was greatly encouraged this week

May 11th, 2009

to hear about the number of people that prayed on Thursday for our country, being the national day of prayer. The Lord has instructed us to pray for our leaders too. I was greatly saddened to read that our president did not participate. This would be a great time for you to e-mail our president and just say, “Mr. President, I am praying for you.” I know that I am encouraged when someone prays for me.

Last week on our radio program we talked to a missionary family who is serving in the middle east. We took time to pray for Israel and God’s protection over them. God is doing mighty things here and around the world and as each day draws closer to His return we will see God at work.

We praise the Lord for meeting our daily needs here at Siloam Missionary Homes and His wonderful blessing. We have three new families moving in over the next several weeks. I praise the Lord for the progress on Papa’s Workshop and also praise Him for providing workers here. We have a group that is remodeling Unit G with new flooring and countertops. This will be beautiful and ready for the new missionary family.

With work projects in full swing, we need you. Come join us. Thank you again for your prayers and financial support.

Because of Christ,

When you’ve had an exciting event in your life,

May 6th, 2009

isn’t it great to talk about it? Recently one of “our” missionaries returned to Siloam Missionary Homes after a three-week visit to a very unsettled region of the world. This was not a sightseeing tourist trip, but a full-fledged ministry experience. It was such a blessing to me to sit down for a couple of hours with a very on fire missionary and listen to the uplifting account of his ministry trip. As he interacted with the people with whom he will be working when he moves with his family to the field, he learned much about how to present Jesus Christ in some difficult circumstances. Being on his own, he also had to learn how to navigate around the area where he will live and work. One of the best results of the trip is that the Lord gave him confirmation that this mission field is where the Lord wants him to serve.

Because this is a sensitive region of the world it is safer not to give too many details, but the Lord knows, so please pray for this missionary family as they continue to find financial support and make other preparations to introduce Jesus Christ to those who don’t know Him.
